THE
WAR.
BELGIAN WOUNDED IN ST. ANNES
Few
towns in England are doing more, for the
assistance of the Belgian nation than St.
Annes, and in addition to the Belgian
refugees in St. Annes, there arrived, on
Tuesday, ten wounded Belgian soldiers. These
soldiers are now being cared for at
Chaseside, Headroomgate Road. Originally the
house was intended to accommodate refugees,
a decision made by a meeting at the Parish
Rooms. Alterations in the Aliens Restriction
Order as applied locally, prevented that
course and an offer to accommodate wounded
soldier was accepted. The cost is being
borne out of a public fund to which all
residents are invited to contribute. Mrs.
Bowden, of Oakley, St. Andrew's Road South,
is the Hon Secretary.
The ten wounded soldiers who arrived shortly
after noon on Tuesday, were conveyed from
Manchester in Red Cross Society cars. They
were wounded at Dixmude, Nieuport and
Peruse, and arrived in Manchester on October
28th. Five of the ten were treated at
Worsley Hall, and the other five at Ancoats.
They are a cheerful jovial company in spite
of their wounds, and their joking and bright
spirits are pleasant to witness. One is
wounded in the right and another in the left
leg, and their joke is that they can
economise by wearing one pair of felt
slippers and one pair of shoes. The wounded
men are : -
Pte. M. Mackenier, 6th Line Regt., crushed
Pte. Rene Devas, 3rd Foot Chasseurs, bullet
wound in thigh.
Pte. C. Badly, 22nd Line Regt., wound in
right foot.
Mehl. J. Gillis, 3rd Transport Corps,
wounded in eye.
Pte. C. Ortegal, 1st Carabineers, wounded
thigh.
Pte. M. Overdeputte, paralysed right arm.
Pte. J. Meymaua, 6th Line Regt., bullet Iron
id in thigh.
Pte. H. Peers, 1st Carabineers, bullet wound
in thigh.
Sergt. M. Raps, 3rd Foot Chasseurs, shrapnel
wound in thigh.
Pte J. B. Hendrich, Grenadiers, right leg,
amputated.
The house has been admirably arranged for
the comfort of the soldiers, with a separate
dining-room and a cosy sitting-room,
provided with an abundance of easy chairs. A
special room has been equipped for the
dressing ,of the wounds, a duty which has
been undertaken by Dr. Elliott. A day-nurse
has been provided by Miss Mackie, and a
night nurse will be in attendance if
required. Among the presents is the loan of
one or two bath chairs.
It is proposed to bring other soldiers as
the others in residence at St. Annes become
convalescent. For this purpose funds will be
necessary from week to week, but the
generosity of the St. Annes public, no
doubt, will see that such good work is not
hampered for lack of funds.
