Lowther College Wales
Bodelwyddan Hall and its grounds
were taken over in June 1920 by Mrs. Florence Lindley who set
about converting it into what was to become Lowther College for
Girls, attracting boarders from as far afield as the Pacific
Islands and Hong Kong. The school flourished until 1982 when it
had to close due to a massive deficit of £167,000.

The property lay empty for a while until Clwyd County Council
purchased the entire estate for £500,000. By coincidence the
National Portrait Gallery was seeking to establish a satellite
gallery to show its large collection of Victorian portraiture.
Bodelwyddan was of the right period and in the right place at
the right time and thus work began on the sympathetic and
creative restoration of both the Castle and its grounds. |
