These lists were compiled by companies such as Barretts or local newspapers such as the Lytham Times & St.Annes Express.

A representative would go door to door asking the name of the head of the household and their profession. The spelling of some names is not always correct because if the family were not there then it would be left to servants or neighbours to provide the information.
