Newspaper article dated 1920 GEORGE LOWE SAILS FOR AUSTRALIA TO-DAY. Mr. George Lowe sails for Australia today, bound for Barwon Heads, Geelong, Victoria, where his eldest son, George Lowe junior, is professional to the Barwon Heads Golf Club. Accompanying him are his son, Ivan, and his daughter, Annie. One son, Allan, and one daughter, Amy (Mrs. Marsden of Manchester), remain in England. All four sons, and two daughters were born in St. Annes. Mr. George Lowe Came, to St. Annes as professional to the newly-formed Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club on July 4th 1888 --32 years ago. For 17 years he held that position, and some time later was one of the founders of the Old Links Club. He was a noted- club maker and coach, and his expert knowledge of the Royal and Ancient game was eagerly sought in the laying out of new links in many parts of the country and the Isle of Man. Sport of all kinds found in him an enthusiast. The gala sports of years ago, the cricket club and the Subscription Bowling Club, of which last-named, he was a playing member, ever had in George Lowe a sure friend and a keen "sport." He introduced the mysteries of golf to a great number of people who subsequently settled as residents and never missed an opportunity of advancing the prosperity of St. Annes by a sustained interest in local affairs and by his ready support to the Ratepayers', Traders and kindred Associations. On one occasion, many years ago he was a candidate for East Ward for the Urban Council, and was "one down” only when the "scores' were counted. St. Annes has a warm place in his affections. There was a tinge of regret in his farewells on Saturday evening, when a number of old friends wished him “bon voyage” and the best of luck and health “down under”. The best wishes of a wide friendship g with him and his across the seas. |
